the numbers are poetic
Mathematics is a form of poetry which transcends poetry in that it proclaims a truth; a form of reasoning which transcends reasoning in that it wants to bring about the truth it proclaims; a form of action, of ritual behavior, which does not find fulfillment in the act but must proclaim and elaborate a poetic form of truth.
– Bochner, The Role of Mathematics in the Rise of Science –
“Numbers Are Poetic” was created for the first edition of the project “A ciascuno il suo” by Galleria Ciocca Arte Contemporanea in Milan. [Learn more]
The idea behind the work is to use numbers as an alphabet to compose sentences, creating a playful contrast between mathematical code and poetry. The piece is a frame-box that must be assembled by the buyer following the provided instructions, encouraging active and participatory engagement with the artwork itself. In this way, a dialogical relationship is established between the artist and the collector: the latter actively participates in the creative process, as the work only finds its completion through their intervention.
“Numbers Are Poetic” offers a reflection on art’s ability to create connections, generate interactions, and break through conventions, transforming seemingly cold and rational elements into something poetic and creative.
